Located in Avondale, in scenic Conception Bay Center, Newfoundland, Roncalli Central High School has a student population of 290 in grades seven through twelve and a teaching staff of 20 with a support staff of 8. The school is part of the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District. Students are drawn from five rural communities in Conception Bay Centre: Holyrood, Harbour Main-Chapel’s Cove-Lakeview, Avondale, Conception Harbour, and Colliers.
Roncalli was opened in 1967. It is named in honor of Pope John XXIII, born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli (November 25, 1881 – June 3, 1963), who was elected as the 261st Pope of the Catholic Church.
Roncalli conducts a full suite of academic courses. The school is active in the areas of public speaking, literary competitions, district art shows, district junior and senior drama festivals, choir, French speak-off, and mathematics competitions. Our students are annually represented at the Canada Skills Competition, the Forum for Young Canadians, the Newfoundland and Labrador Youth Parliament, the Provincial Student Leadership Conference, the Newfoundland Science Centre Boat Races, and the Encounters with Canada program. In addition, Roncalli students have an active Student Council, Environment Club, Social Justice Club, school newspaper, along with an award winning sports program.
