Domestic Water Conservation Plan- June 21, 2019

June 21, 2019

The Domestic Water Conservation Plan applies to ALL domestic uses of water in the Town of Holyrood.

SWIMMING POOLS
If you have an in-ground or above-ground pool and plan on filling it with Town water, you are required to contact the Town Office for a permit and staff will coordinate appropriate times for you to avail of town water. These times will be later in the evening and throughout the night.
Permit Cost for Swimming Pools- $50 if you have not had a permit in the last 3 years. If you had a permit, cost is $15 per 1000 gallons. If you only require a water top up in your pool, please estimate the number of gallons required.

WATERING LAWNS
 The a.m. is the best time to water the lawn because the air is cooler and there’s usually not much wind to blow the droplets.
 In the middle of the day, water evaporates too quickly. In the evenings, water can cling to the blades of grass overnight, which can cause lawn diseases.
 When people water lawns later in the evening, the water sits there and promotes
fungus.
 A wet lawn at night is the perfect condition for fungus to grow.
 Along with mowing the grass too short, watering at night is about the worst thing to do for a lawn.

EXISTING LAWNS

Watering of existing lawns with a sprinkler system is restricted to two days per week, between the hours of 5:00 am – 8:00 am, in accordance with the following schedule:
 Even civic address numbers on Wednesday and Saturday
 Odd civic address numbers on Thursday and Sunday

NEW LAWNS
New lawns and landscaping are exempt from the lawn watering restrictions for a period of 60 days following installation and plantation, however, watering is designated between the hours of
5:00 am-8:00 am. Lawns that are hydro seeded are exempt for similar period of 60 days and can also be watered for 20-30 minutes between 7:00 pm-8:00 pm.

Hand watering of trees, shrubs, flowers, and vegetable gardens with a water can or hose with an automatic shut off nozzle is permitted at any time.

Please contact the Town Office at 229-7252 to register your new lawn and/or to pick up a Swimming Pool Permit.

THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS TO SAVE WATER AND THEY ALL START WITH YOU
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
 When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.
 Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, driveway, or road.
 Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 liters a month.
 For cold drinks keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap. This way, every drop goes down you and not the drain.
 Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap. Then collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, reuse it to water houseplants.
 We’re more likely to notice leaks indoors, but don’t forget to check outdoor faucets, sprinklers and hoses for leaks.
 Shorten your shower by a minute or two and you’ll save up to 150 liters per month.
 Adjust your lawn mower to a higher setting. A taller lawn shades roots and holds soil moisture better than if it is closely clipped.
 When running a bath, plug the tub before turning the water on, and then adjust the temperature as the tub fills up.
 Collect water from your roof to water your garden.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
 Can my children use water toys – i.e. waterslides, slip –n- slides water sprinklers?
Yes – But water should not be left running when children are not using these toys.
 Can I wash my car?
Yes – Residential washing of cars is permitted with the use of a hose with an automatic shutoff nozzle.
 Can I wash my driveway or parking lot?
No – Washing of paved driveway or parking lot is prohibited.
 Can I have a Car Wash Fundraiser?
Yes – Car washes for fund-raising are permitted with the use of an automatic shutoff nozzle. Please note that a car wash permit (no fee) is required from the Town. Free flowing car washes, even for the purposes of fundraising, are not permitted. Automatic shutoff nozzles are required to be utilized at all times.
 Can I wash my siding and windows?
Yes – siding and window washing is permitted with the use of an automatic shutoff nozzle.

The Town asks for your full cooperation to conserve water as leaks and excessive non-domestic use have potential to cause the water system to have a low water level, which may result in another water ban.
